How do swim time conversions work?
The standard ("Classical" or Colorado) method multiplies your time by a factor for the distance difference and adds seconds for the turns you gain or lose — for example, a yards time converts to short course meters at ×1.11, and long course adds a per-stroke turn allowance on top (0.6s per 50 for backstroke up to 1.0s per 50 for breaststroke, whose pullouts make turns worth the most). Distance freestyle pairs convert across events: 500y ↔ 400m, 1000y ↔ 800m, and 1650y ↔ 1500m.
Are these conversions official?
No — USA Swimming has no official conversion model. The Classical factors are a community standard originally published by Colorado Swimming and used by most conversion tools. The NCAA does publish official factors, but they are administrative tools for meet entries, not performance predictions. Every conversion is an estimate, typically within about 1–2%, varying by swimmer, age, and sex.
What does a 500 free convert to in meters?
The 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyle exist only in yards pools. They convert across to the metric distance events: the 500y pairs with the 400m, the 1000y with the 800m, and the 1650y with the 1500m — each with its own published factor, so the converted time is for a genuinely different (but equivalent) race.
Why is the NCAA conversion different?
The NCAA publishes its own conservative factors for converting metric times to yards for championship entries — currently ×0.906 for most events, with special factors for the distance pairs — and the arithmetic truncates rather than rounds. Long-course (LCM) conversions are only approved by the NCAA in Olympic years; the most recent published table is from 2024 and is sex-specific. Note we implement the Division I factors; the Division II documents print slightly different values (0.896 for most events), so D2 entries should be checked against the D2 pre-championship materials.
