What are FINA points (World Aquatics points)?
A single scale for comparing swims across different events, sexes, and courses. Each event has an official base time — set to the approved world record at the start of the scoring cycle — and a swim scores P = 1000 × (base ÷ time)³, rounded down. Swimming the base time exactly scores 1000; slower swims score progressively fewer points on a cubic curve.
Why are they sometimes called FINA points and sometimes World Aquatics points?
FINA, the international federation, renamed itself World Aquatics in 2023. The points system is the same — most coaches and rankings still say “FINA points,” while official documents now say World Aquatics points.
Why is there no yards (SCY) option?
World Aquatics only publishes official base times for meter courses — 25m (SCM) and 50m (LCM). There is no official points table for yards, and we would rather offer no number than an unofficial one. For yards benchmarks, see the USA Swimming motivational time standards instead.
What counts as a good score?
Context matters, but as rough reference points: 1000 is world-record level, 900+ is world-class, 800+ is international level, 700+ is national level, and 500–600 is a strong age-group or club swim. The 500–900 ladder on this page shows what those scores mean in real times for your event.
